The City of Tacoma's Environmental Services Department has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Technician III. The Science and Engineering Division is seeking a highly motivated individual who is interested in working on diverse and challenging capital projects to join their dynamic award winning team. 

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team member with a strong ability to produce drawings for stormwater, wastewater, roadway projects, and general engineering concepts and applications. This is sub-professional engineering work in an office and/or field environment, mapping and drafting using AutoCAD Civil3D. An Engineering Technician III is expected to be self-directed, able to work independently, and may act as the lead for other engineering technicians on assigned projects.
The Engineering Tech III will be have the following core duties and support functions:

  • Developing drawing packages for stormwater, wastewater, and roadway projects
  • Using AutoCAD Civil3D tools to create and edit: alignments, pipe networks, corridors, surfaces, profiles, sections, grading, data shortcuts, sheet set manager, label styles
  • Setting up and maintaining AutoCAD xrefs
  • Modifying plans for change orders, revisions and record drawings
  • Modifying plans per redlined and/or verbal instructions
  • Coordinating design changes with the project lead
  • Estimating time to complete tasks
  • Creating base maps using survey data and utility maps
  • Archiving and file management
  • Creating quantity take-offs
  • Creating figures and graphics for public meetings

To be successful in this position, candidates will need to be proficient in using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams, and AutoCAD Civil3D databases

The ESSE Division provides a unique opportunity to work on a wide variety of complex capital improvement projects. These types of projects can cover the full spectrum of typical municipal infrastructure improvements associated with Wastewater, Surface Water, and Solid Waste Utilities. Some of these projects include significant partnering with the City's Public Works Department and Tacoma Public Utilities. These two different departments often add Water, Power, and Street infrastructure improvements to our projects. Being able to be involved in projects and programs from their inception through their full life is a unique and exciting component of working in the ESSE.

 The ESSE Division primarily works on projects that fall into either of the following two areas:

  • Facility Capital Projects - Projects that include multiple engineering disciplines found in typical municipal utility facilities such as: wastewater treatment processes; wastewater and surface water pumping systems; and electrical and instrumentation systems
  • Collection System Projects - Projects that focus on the planning and design of municipal wastewater and surface water collection system capital improvements, including both open cut and trenchless technologies and associated roadway improvements as well as state of the art green infrastructure and innovative surface water management components

This is a position that significantly contributes to Environmental Service's mission to provide sustainable and cost-effective management services to protect the environment and recover value from Tacoma's waste streams.
The applicant selected for this position will co-locate with a group of dynamic and creative engineers, scientists, and technicians all housed at Tacoma's new Center For Urban Waters facility situated adjacent Tacoma's Foss Waterway in downtown Tacoma. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Local Union 17 PTE. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.

Graduation from high school or equivalent

AND one (1) of the following:

  • Six (6) years' experience in sub-professional engineering related work


  • Four (4) years' experience in sub-professional engineering related work and completion of a recognized engineering technology vocational education program which includes computer-aided drafting training


  • Four (4) years' experience in sub-professional engineering related work and two years' relevant college level engineering course work
